Discovering the soul of Grottaglie: a journey into Casa Vestita and the world of handmade ceramics
An authentic experience through history, craftsmanship and quiet beauty in the heart of Puglia
There are places where time seems to slow down, where every corner tells a story and every gesture preserves an ancient art. One of those places is Grottaglie, in the very heart of Puglia’s ceramic tradition. And there’s no better way to experience its soul than by joining a private visit through Casa Vestita, a local artisan workshop, and the charming historic center that surrounds them.
Casa Vestita: a secret garden of art and memory
Behind a modest gate in the Quartiere delle Ceramiche lies one of the best-kept secrets in southern Italy: Casa Vestita. This evocative private home, curated and lived in by ceramist Mimmo Vestita, is a vibrant testimony to the cultural layers of the region — from ancient Greek ruins to 19th-century furnishings, passing through the Middle Ages.
As you step into the lush garden, surrounded by fragments of history and Mediterranean plants, you’re immediately immersed in a timeless atmosphere. The space is a perfect blend of archaeological discovery, artistic sensitivity, and southern Italian hospitality. This is not a museum: it’s a living story.
A hidden sanctuary beneath the earth: the Basilian rock-hewn church of Casa Vestita
Few visitors expect to find, tucked beneath the peaceful garden of Casa Vestita, a Basilian rock-hewn church of extraordinary historical and artistic value. Small in size — clearly not designed for grand liturgical ceremonies — this sacred space invites intimacy and awe. Its three shallow niches are adorned with well-preserved frescoes of remarkable beauty, depicting Saint Nicholas, Christ Pantocrator, and Saint Barbara. These paintings represent one of the most refined expressions of Byzantine pictorial culture in Puglia, comparable to the frescoes found in the most revered crypts of southern Italy.
But the church is more than an artistic treasure. It is also a spiritual and historical crossroads. An ancient stoup still guards the entrance, and carved on the wall, a Templar cross bears witness to the passage of knights along the Via Longobardorum on their way to the Holy Land.
Archaeological excavations have uncovered an extraordinary wealth of material: a rare skiphos, ceramics with Renaissance-style decorations, two ancient cisterns, and an original cocciopesto floor. Layer after layer, the site reveals itself as a living archive — a tangible map of centuries of devotion, craftsmanship, and Mediterranean life.
Hands in clay: inside the artisan workshop

Right next to Casa Vestita, our journey continues into the artisan workshop, where the traditional techniques of terracotta take shape every day. Here, local artisans welcome our guests with open arms, sharing not only the secrets of their craft but also the passion that fuels their daily work.
Visitors are not mere spectators: some have even crafted their own unique piece under the guidance of a master ceramist. Whether it’s shaping a small bowl or decorating a tile, the tactile experience is both meditative and unforgettable — a true connection to centuries of tradition.
Walking through Grottaglie’s historic center
The experience also includes a guided walk through the historic center of Grottaglie, a town that gracefully reveals its Baroque churches, whitewashed alleyways, and vibrant street life. From panoramic viewpoints to small local shops, this walk completes the mosaic of a destination that’s both authentic and deeply rooted in its cultural identity.
